Travelling as a Vegan: Berlin Edition

Considering Berlin is the capital of a country infamous for its ‘Bratwurst’ I was very pleasantly surprised by how many vegan options this city had to offer. I must admit it’s been a couple of years since I’ve been back and there may be a few new vegan eateries on the block. Nevertheless, I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing some of the most incredible plant-based food this city had to offer. So I took it upon myself to compile a list of my top 3 favourite places to get a decent feed (should anyone happen to find themselves in Berlin for a long weekend with a rumbling tummy.)

First and foremost, you absolutely must get yourself down to Brammibal’s Donut store, which was located in the centre of Berlin. The good news is that since my last visit, I have seen they have expanded to over 7 sites in the city – so they shouldn’t be hard to miss! This donut stop will absolutely not disappoint. You can indulge in a range of goodies from a sickly ‘chocolate peanut fudge’ to the sweetest of ‘apple pie’ flavours (and everything in between).

Next up is Swing Kitchen. This place had such incredible mock meat I almost couldn’t finish some of the food because the taste and texture was so real! (I am mainly referring to their ‘chicken’ nuggets). I am also delighted to say that much like Brammibal’s, they also have multiple sites around Berlin – so you won’t miss out! You really don’t have to be vegan to try these great places, you just need to appreciate really good tasting food.

The last on my list of ‘must visits’ for the German capital is the: Veganz store. As someone who has been vegan for what people would describe as ‘since before being vegan was cool,’ I almost cried at the sight of an entirely all vegan supermarket. It really did feel like I was living in the future. Just to be able to walk through a store knowing that everything in there was cruelty free was an unreal experience at the time. Situated above was a wonderful ‘clean eating’ restraint called ‘The Bowl’ which unfortunately seems to have closed since I was last there. However, not all is lost! It seems to have been replaced by a vegan cafe and sushi restaurant which have both got incredible reviews. So make sure to check these out too!

Feel free to share your thoughts on any of the locations mentioned and please give a shout out to your favourite vegan restaurants in Berlin!
