Being one of the largest cities in the world, it is unsurprising that Sydney has managed to fit such a wide range of vegan food outlets amongst all the hustle and bustle. There is such an abundance of choice, that it is probably easier for me to break my recommendations down into suburbs rather than to discuss individual restaurants. So if you are planning a trip to Sydney in the not so distant future, feel free to keep reading for some incredible spots that you absolutely cannot afford to miss.

- Newtown – Newtown is a suburb that might as well be renamed ‘the Vegan Capital of NSW’. I cannot even begin to explain how many options plant-based eaters have here. From entirely vegan cheese mongers to entirely vegan Vietnamese restaurants, this place really does have it all. My top recommendations (in no particular order) include: The Golden Lotus (Vietnamese), Soul Burger (one of 4 stores located in Sydney), Vina Vegan (also Vietnamese), Vandal (‘unauthentic’ Mexican), Little Turtle Vegan Restaurant (Thai), Gigi Pizzeria (Italian), Don Fred (newly opened focaccia restaurant), Green Mushroom (Indian) and Buddha Bowl (organic, wholefood café). In between these are also handfuls of quirky little cafes selling vegan gelato, dairy-free smoothies and lots of other tasty treats. If you’re a fellow member of the plant-based community or just someone intrigued to try new things then I could not recommend visiting Newtown enough!

- Surrey Hills – Surrey Hills is located a little closer to the heart of Sydney and is home to an eclectic range of vegan restaurants. My top recommendations for here would be: Yulli’s (South-East Asian and Mediterranean inspired cuisines), Shift Eatery (Vegan Deli), Bad Hombres (Mexican inspired menu) and last but by no means least, Bhajiya (Indian cuisine).

- Glebe – Just a stone’s throw away from Newton, Glebe is a must-visit for those weekend mornings when you are simply craving a great coffee and some delicious food. The top spots for this part of town include: Lilli Pad Café (who’s equally delightful and slightly older sister store can be located in Cairns, QLD) and the incredible Oh My Days Patisserie. Glebe is also home to it’s very own ‘Vegan Grocery Store‘ as well as many other interesting vintage stores and morning markets – perfect for those Sunday strolls.

These, of course, are not the only vegan eateries in the city. Sydney really is a herbivorous hub for plant-based businesses, and many other shops, cafes and restaurants can be found dotted around in the little pockets of this vast city (Yellow, Mary’s and Eden, just to name a few more!) As much as I hope you take inspiration from this blog, I would also highly recommend joining local vegan groups on social media prior to your visit in order to stay on top of all the newly opened businesses that keep popping up left, right and center. This is also a great way s to connect with other, like-minded people. So eat your hearts out, and please feel free to share your favourite vegan Sydney eateries in the comments below!
